Lean vs Six Sigma

Lean & Six Sigma

The two popular terms and philosophy much talked about during process improvement and excellence are Lean and Six Sigma.

Well, what is the difference?

Lean: This philosophy is a very commonsenical approach. Lean can be implemented when a problem exists, root cause is known and solution can be implemented immediately. Lean embraces methodology like KAIZEN, SAMURAI and Zen Master for having the problem solved. Individuals get certified as Lean Kaizen, Lean Samurai and Lean Zen Master.

Six Sigma: This philosophy is a data driven approach. Six Sigma projects gets implemented when a business experiences a problem, problem has multiple potential causes and hence data needs to be analyzed for every cause impacting the problem. Hence the solution cannot be implemented. Six Sigma projects primarily focuses on metrics for process improvement. Six Sigma embraces DMAIC (Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve, Control) and DMADV (Define, Measure, Analyze, Design, Validate) or DFSS (Design for Six Sigma) as methodologies. Individuals following this methodology get certified as Green Belt, Black Belt and Master Black Belt.

Go Green is a concept which is in the air today.  Keeping GREEN across and around us has become so important and critical today. Our mother-nature and natural resources around us are getting destroyed as the civilization is wide spreading across all the parts of the world.

With this present situation and the future that we can think about, can we imagine what can be the result with mother-nature and natural resources that we have today.  Well this sounds very scary!!

What are the ways as a citizen of India, we can come out with solutions.  Well…. One such solution which is with us is: “Green Lean Sigma”.

Lean Six Sigma is an ultimate combination where Lean and Six Sigma methodology can be combined together for improving and making any process very efficient.

These terms are very popular and to just understand the same; Lean is a methodology utilized in reducing waste by identifying non value adding (unwanted) activities in the end result which can impact negatively.  The Eight types of waste is a good example which can be broadly classified as:

D – Defects

O – Overproduction

W – Waiting

N – Non Utilized

T – Transportation

I – Inventory

M – Motion

E – Excess Processing

Six Sigma focuses on improving performance which ultimately results in reducing defects and improves quality in any process.

Professionals and practitioners refer to this as Lean Six Sigma.  Experts in these methodologies utilize Lean Six Sigma methodology to improve on efficiency, productivity and many more.

As the results unfolds, Lean Six Sigma normally results in better environmental performance as well.  We have two strong reasons for this:

  1. Environmental impacts are rooted within wastes that Lean focuses.
  2. The culture of Lean is highly beneficial to reduce waste, minimize pollution and optimize natural resources.

LSS objective is to eliminate all types of wastes, and reducing wastes often has a positive environmental impact.

Senior Management in Government bodies’ and Corporates have to involve in reducing wastes; this is highly critical and important which is the need today.  Focus on reducing waste by implementing Lean by reducing eight types of waste (D-O-W-N-T-I-M-E), we can definitely end up discovering additional positive environmental outcomes which can help support us in keeping the environment GREEN.

Lean Six Sigma Philosophy adopts two major methodologies namely DMAIC and DMADV which supports throughout the lifecycle of a project.

  • DMAIC basically stands for ‘D’ – Define, ‘M’ – Measure, ‘A’ – Analyze, ‘I’ – Improve, ‘C’ – Control and
  • DMADV stands for ‘D’ – Define, ‘M’ – Measure, ‘A’ – Analyze, ‘D’ – Design, ‘V’ – Validate

For any organization to improve their internal processes; an organization has to have a strong team who can drive Lean Six Sigma projects. This team is a combination of Quality (Lean Six Sigma) Team, Operations Team and the Senior Management Team. The Lean Six Sigma team identified needs to understand the VOC – Voice of Customer at a performance metric level and then use the drilldown tree technique to identify the CTQ – Critical to Quality.

Formation of a strong team in an organization acts as an ARMI (Approver, Resource, Member and Informed Party) is extremely critical and an important milestone.  If you have a strong ARMI, your project will be very strong in terms of rigor and hence your expected results can be much achieved.
